Framed around three core acts or stages, Little Book of Advent dwells in the waiting and anticipation centuries before the birth of Jesus, celebrates the promises about Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection and the fulfilment of the prophecies, and joins us in the now as we wait for Jesus’ promised return.
“Little Book of Advent is an invitation to actively wait for the coming of Jesus, to witness the fulfilment of his life, and to anticipate his return,” says Kris Calver from Lifewords. “So throughout the Little Book, there is a sense of flickering comfort and hope in what has been fulfilled, held in tension with the reality that we are still waiting – but this time for Jesus to come again.”
This new resource creates a narrative, in both design and content, like that of Luke 1:78-79: “Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.” It begins with a flickering light, a light dawning. These subtle elements build to the final full-design spread of a gift waiting to be received – a promised gift, a gift like no other.
Subtle seasonal references are present throughout the Little Book along with a nod to the time of year in the colour palette of greens, and golds, contrasting with the bleakness of a cold winter’s night in the greys and blues.
Kris shared: “Advent is a time of reflection, yet also of holding on to the promise that something better is coming. We intentionally sought to create room in the design for the reader to take the words in slowly, and to reflect and dwell on their meaning.”
